Becoming a Christian

You can begin by looking at the character of God - two things impress you:

  • He is slow to anger, abounding in love. Psalm 103:8
  • He is holy, which means absolutely clean, truthful and honest

God wants to get close so that we can enjoy secure love. However, we are not comfortable with a Holy God: "The sinful mind is hostile to God" Romans 8:7

God detests our wrongdoings: "The wrath of God is being revealed against all godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the Truth" Romans 1:8 2

Think seriously about your present position: we all do wrong in God's eyes. If we compare ourselves to other people we might feel, 'we're not so bad,' but like a dart which falls short of the dart board, we fall short of God's standards: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23 ('glory' = God's holiness put on display)

We are separate from God now: "Your iniquities have separated you from your God" Isaiah 59:2

We are in great danger: "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life for God's wrath remains on him" John 3:3 3

God hates this separation: "I take no pleasure in the death of anyone', declares the Sovereign Lord. 'Repent and live. Why will you die?" Ezekial 18:31 4

The bad news is that none of my good actions (such as being kind, giving time and money, praying, going to church) can get rid of my guilt. The apostle Paul tried all the things in that list and more - they could not get him close to God: "I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ" Phillippians 3:8 5

However, the good news is that God, so full of love for his people who have been hostile to Him, thought of a way of ending the separation: "Where (our) sin increased, His undeserved loved increased all the more" Romans 5:20

God's Method was to transfer our record of wrong to Jesus. He then made it possible for Jesus' beautiful cleanness to be transferred to us: "God made Jesus who had no sin to be sin for us - so that in Him (fellowship with Jesus) we might become the righteousness of God" 2 Corinthians 5:21 6

Can you see how much God values you, yet? He gave His Son, to be pierced (on the cross) for our transgressions, He, (Jesus) was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him.

Just before Jesus died He shouted, "It is finished!", meaning 'I have paid the full penalty for the sins of the world.' We can get close to God because of what Jesus has done! Father God has opened up the way!

However, this is your part. Please do not drift through life in the vague hope, 'I will be all right in the end.' You won't! Get right with God now. These are two steps Jesus spoke about:

  • A new way of thinking that leads to different behavior. Up to now you have thought, 'what do I want?" Now you ask, 'What does God want?' This leads to confession, 'I have done many things that God hates. Please forgive me.' And to a firm decision to walk away from all that displeases God.
  • A new confidence in Jesus! He has dealt with all your sin. He has made you a marvelous promise that if you ask Him, He will come and live in you and with you!

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in" Revelation 3:20

Note that He will come into your life. This is NOT a maybe. Jesus is keen. Being a Christian is the most wonderful thing that can happen to anyone. A Christian is someone who has met God through Jesus. He has Jesus living in and through him.
